Marker Starling (Chris A. Cummings, formerly Mantler) has been performing in Toronto and elsewhere since 1999. Along the way, he released nine albums on such labels as Tomlab (Germany), Blocks Recording Club (Canada), and 7e.p. (Japan), as well as having a longtime association with UK-based Tin Angel Records. A chance encounter just prior to Covid's first wave resulted in a duet with singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Dorothea Paas, whose debut Lp Anything Can't Happen was subsequently released on Telephone Explosion records in 2021. The duet and other recordings in turn resulted in a live performance in November 2021 in which Dorothea Paas played guitar and sang as a member of the Marker Starling band (including Jay Anderson (drums) and Andrew Scott (bass and other instruments)) and the results were so magical that all parties involved decided it was a miracle worth repeating. With an expanded setlist, the show you will see at the Monarch Tavern on Sat Feb 19 will be an extension of that miracle, featuring many songs from the upcoming tenth Marker Starling album Diamond Violence, including the aforementioned duet.
To make the event even more unique, Dorothea Paas will also play a solo set on classical guitar, with many songs never performed live before, and some with Wurlitzer accompaniment by Chris A. Cummings.
